… everyday in Granada.

Quick background: This is a list of surprises coming from a guiri (pale skinned foreigner) celebrating almost 2 years in Granada.

This is not a criticism of my adopted city, merely a tongue in cheek look at how things are.

No.12 of

Things that surprise me in Granada:

How quiet the streets are at 4 o’clock in the afternoon

but..

even more surprised when I see people in the streets in the afternoon. (do you not know it is siesta time? And how fecking hot is it anyway?).

No.11

How corrupt the mayor of Granada is,

but..

he keeps getting elected.

No.10

How many hippies live in Granada,

but..

the right wing politicians keep getting elected to office (see point above).

No.9

How many bars there are in the city,

but..

there are even more hairdressers.

No.8

How difficult it is to get anything done (think; contracting builders, civil servants, tradesmen)

but..

how quickly things get done if you know the right people.

No.7

How many foreigners (see guiri above) come to Granada hoping to do something different,

but..

how many pointless obstacles are placed in their path (see corrupt mayor).

No. 6

How friendly the local Granadinos are,

but..

how difficult it is to really get to know any of them.

No.5

How Granadino men seem to be born to charm women,

but..

how the women can match and even outplay their male counterparts.

No.4

How Granadinos love to buy nice coats,

but..

will not leave their house if it is raining.

No.3

How everybody complains how poor they are,

but..

they all have holiday homes on the coast.

No.2

How well educated and intelligent the students are,

but..

they take 7 yeas to complete a 4 year degree.

No.1

And the top spot goes to…

How everybody tries to avoid doing anything that might be considered work,

but..

how they will get out in numbers to demonstrate against unemployment at every possible opportunity.
